Food Security

World Health Organization (WHO) defines food security as “all people, at all times, having physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life”.

The goal of Caring Partners Global (CPG) in partnering with Matangwe Community Health and Development Program (MCHDP) goes beyond meagre subsistence. Our goal is to reach food security in the seventeen rural communities where we provide services and foster market production. The ability of rural individuals to produce and harvest food beyond insecure subsistence levels reduces poverty, generates positive impact on health and economic improvement.

We partner with agricultural specialists to demonstrate four layers of production and supply potable water.

  • Intensive kitchen gardens including kale, spinach, and tomatoes.

  • Small field rotations of peanut, maize, cassava, dry bean, millet, sorghum, and lentil.

  • Permaculture for tropical fruits including banana, orange, papaya, guava, and lemon.

  • Small flock poultry management.

  • Distribution of potable water to 34 water tanks in 17 villages

This production is largely consumed directly with any surplus sold for cash.  Any income generated is used by locals to pay their children’s school fees and to otherwise raise local living standards.

In Western Kenya food security is both a rural and urban issue. Our focus upon resilience in rural communities to produce a marketable surplus beyond household needs to also supplement the inadequate supply of preferred foods in the nearby urban centers.
