The People We Serve

Caring Partners Global (CPG) works with the Matangwe Community Health and Development Program (MCHDP) in Kenya to provide access to comprehensive primary health care services. The target population is the 70,000 people living in the isolated rural communities nestled along the Northeastern shores of Lake Victoria and its Islands which are farther away from the main health care referral centres.  

The services focus on health promotion and disease prevention. The hospital offers inpatient, outpatient, as well as community outreach programs in partnership with local schools and faith-based centres.

The Matangwe Hospital is remote, rural, and poorly resourced both from basic infrastructure or access to essential medical supplies such as oxygen or medications necessary to effectively operate the much-needed services close to home for the impoverished populations. The nearest government health care facility is located 7 km each way over rough roads by foot, bicycle, or a motorbike taxi. Specialist consultations are 72 km away, and require a whole of day travel to Kisumu by public transportation, with no guarantee of same day access unless one has funds to access private medical care.

Programs provided

Maternal/Child Health : antenatal, delivery , postpartum and newborn care and child welfare and immunizations

Infectious Disease prevention, treatment and support services (HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis)

Primary Care: health promotion and chronic disease management and education

Service Volumes

• 15 inpatients daily

• 30-40 outpatients daily

• 70-80 outreach patients weekly

Recent Advancements

Achieved full accreditation with the Kenyan National Health Service

Expanded inpatient capacity to 37 beds with a new separate wing for our maternal/child program

Established program to connect local residents with NHIF (national health service) to improve access to care and support sustainability

Partnerships

CPG has partnered with McMaster University, DeGroote School of Medicine to offer a Global Health Elective experience to medical students. The Covid pandemic unfortunately limited the ability of students to travel to Kenya but we plan on renewing that partnership within the next year.
